PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

GOALS & CLASSROOM IMPLEMENTATION

My personal philosophy on education is one that celebrates the uniqueness of every student and takes into account their individual needs, interests, and strengths. Learning for me is about so much more than memorizing facts or regurgitating information. It's about creating a holistic learning environment geared towards equipping each student with the tools they need to achieve success in life; an environment where anything is possible if you put in the hard work. As an educator, it is my job to foster an atmosphere of creativity, curiosity, growth mindset and supportiveness among my students- all working together to build a stronger foundation for success in both academics and beyond. With that said, it’s time we start changing expectations around education and create a world where everyone has access to quality educational opportunities - no matter who they are or where they come from.

CURRICULUM

Develop and implement engaging, fun units and lessons based on standards, materials available, student interest, and cross-curricular subjects.

Promote literacy, critical-thinking, problem solving, collaboration and applications to everyday life for all students.

DIFFERENTIATION & DIVERSITY

As an educator, I believe that it is essential to incorporate diversity and differentiation in learning inside the classroom to provide a positive and inclusive learning environment. I recognize that every student comes from a unique cultural background and has different learning styles, abilities, and needs. Therefore, I strive to create a classroom where every student feels valued and included, regardless of their background or abilities. I incorporate diverse materials, such as authentic texts, music, and videos, to expose my students to different cultures and perspectives. I also differentiate my instruction to meet the individual needs of my students, providing various learning activities and assessments that allow them to demonstrate their understanding of the language in different ways. By incorporating diversity and differentiation in my teaching, I hope to foster a love for whatever topic it is that I am teaching in all my students, regardless of their background or abilities.

LIFELONG LEARNING

As a teacher I aim to encourage life-long learning in all my students.

  • Exposing students to opportunities beyond the classroom is one way to foster a love of learning.

  • Take advantage of the surrounding environment to provide meaningful field trips that relate the content to resources or the history of where I’m teaching.

  • Relating the material to students’ lives.

  • Use personal experiences to teach students about the world beyond their community.

    • Example: While tutoring overseas, I shared stories of my personal life experiences (School life in Buenos Aires, What community looks like in Argentina, etc) to broaden my students' view of the world beyond what they know.

COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION

  • Maintained regular communication with direct content area supervisors as well as parents, and students. (An open relationship promotes opportunities for support in the various areas of teaching including curriculum, behavior issues, parental involvement and other concerns within the school.)

  • Strong communication with parents and guardians is essential for any learning evrionment.

  • Contact parents/guardians when problems arise, but also when a student has done something successful in the classroom to help develop positive parent-teacher relationship.

    • Example: I developed a classroom website to communicate assignments, classroom progression, and the capturing of special moments. â€‹

  • Collaboration with fellow teachers to share ideas or provide support.

    • Example: Worked with other same-grade-level teachers from other classes during Professional Development days to share and dissect best practices related to state standards.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

  • I hold each student accountable for his/her/their learning to encourage him/her/them to succeed in the classroom.

  • The classroom environment is one that fosters respect for all, responsibility for actions, and readiness to learn.

  • Descriptive classroom procedures direct students to the type of behavior they are expected to demonstrate. Continual practice and opportunities for leadership allow students to develop habits that promote learning.

  • Students develop independent work habits as well as collaboration with peers, through varied classroom opportunities.

  • I have a high expectation for all students, requiring them to put forth the effort and work that they are all capable of. When a student doesn’t reach this expectation on a particular assignment, I give them the chance to reflect on what they did and provide the opportunity to improve on their understanding.
